The Kiss

The Kiss

So not that it matters or anything, but The Boy (My Boy!) and I tied the legal knot at the Fort Worth City Hall on the 08/10/09. We are still going to have a celebration in Feburary (are you kidding? pass up an excuse for a party? Besides, I so need more than a couple of months to plan this!)

We only had mom and dad and the brother come along. They came up from Houston. I got dressed in my beautiful Ted Baker dress, wore some matching champagne peep toes, carried the vintage blue Dior clutch my mother handed down to me and he ironed (!!! I was surprised too. Still wrinkly but the thought was nice) his white Calvin Klein shirt to wear with his black pants and jacket (though the blacks don’t match and I am not going to lie it bugged me to no end. I really don’t have my priorities straight).

We drove down to Downtown Fort Worth City Hall to get married. Had to walk into 3 buildings to find the right building. City Hall, Civil Courts, Courthouse, really, I was just looking for a parade of brides walking into a building to show me the way but it was not a day for weddings. Cops were at the Courts and we had to put our belongings into gray plastic buckets to be scanned.

“Sir,” a cop stopped the Boy, “you need to remove your shoes too”

“Man, really? I am about to get married”

I am just kidding. Though he told me later he really did want to say that.

“You want me to part with vintage Dior? Are you kidding me?” was what I wanted to say but we both held our tongues.

There was no soft look in the eyes of the cops scanning our belongings as they took in our attire. No smile of understanding (or pity) when I asked where we go to get married. No congratulations. Made me wonder how many brides and grooms they saw everyday when the idea of marriage and happily ever after did not provoke a reaction. Took the elevator to the 4th floor where the wedding office was. They took our marraige licence and told us to wait in the corridor. We had barely enough time to sit in the wooden benches in the corridors before the court officer escorted us into the courtroom.

“It’s like a mini Law and Order!” I squealed. What can I say Law and Order is our favorite show.

The judge came in and with much humor I noticed his last name: Swearingin. I am not even kidding.

He was a nice man with a quiet demeanor. He invited dad to stand behind him at the bench so Dad could take better pictures. Dad nervously side stepped his way over. Mom leaned misty eyed on the witness booth (how appropriate). The Boy and I held hands and I looked deep in his blue green eyes as he repeated the vows men have been saying to their brides for generations. Soon it was my turn and right in the middle of my vows, my phone rang.

Oh. My. Goodness.

I could not look at the Boy anymore. I knew if I did I would just burst out laughing. And the phone kept ringing. I don’t think I paid much attention to the words I was repeating because all I could think about was “someone turn my phone off!” We got through it eventually. The Boy shook his head and smirked, “I turned my phone off”

And then the kiss. “I love this Man,” I thought. We took two kisses because one was just not sufficent.

We took pictures. The judge (Swearingin!) took pictures of all of us. Holding the marriage licence. Lord, how I hate those kinds of photos. The one where the bride is hugging the groom, holding the marriage licence with a thumbs up sign towards the camera. Gag me. And here I am, holding my marraige licence smiling at the camera. No thumbs up though I was tempted just to be a smart-ass but then no one would get the joke (except maybe the Boy).

And that was it. We are technically married though in my heart and in his, we have been married for a long time. It does give me great pleasure to see him wear his ring. I want to say possessively like the birds in “Finding Nemo”, “Mine! Mine! Mine!” But that’s just silly.

The token photo. You can tell the Boy is oh so excited!
